I hope you guys enjoyed this crazy build! It's been a wild journey trying to get this video released - firstly with the delays caused by the ideas that didn't work, and then ultimately by a HARD DRIVE FAILURE! Literally ALL the footage in this video was lost, and it was only thanks to some great data recovery fellows that you're seeing this at all. Backup system implemented now, fyi ;) because of these delays, this is actually quite an old video now (like 1 year) but I'm glad it's able to see the light of day as I think the final result is SUPER COOL! In hind sight I may not have started this project of perseverance, but it taught me such a lot in terms of which projects to make to show you guys and how experimental I can ultimately risk being. I know that basically none of you will make this, but the methodology ultimately settled upon is interesting and might have many more use cases. Either way it makes for interesting watching, so I hope you all enjoy it! ~Matt

A: Just needed to make it large so that it moves enough air to be useful. Ask away if you have any more questions :)

    • Im late to the party so what uve said may have been mentioned but a subwoofer and a reed valve setup could pump air.

    • It will only push the air in the moving direction so it has the same performance

  • This guy might be the most underrated genius on ILaward....I mean literally genius.

    • This is just engineering, he makes clever inventions in a very polished way but its not genius, most engineers on earth do this. Its why we are interested in the profession to begin with.

    • @James Van Daele His talent is not wasted on YT as it's targeted to DIYers. The thing he makes are really cool but the industry has generally thought of that (sometimes decades ago, like in this video) and they've made other compromises to make more viable solutions.

  • I can't believe this is a real video. it's like I'm having a really specific dream. you're making a totally silent air cooling method, something I often think about, but you're not even doing it in any kind of conventional way, and you're making it so clean and precise, and it all came together too well. my brain doesn't even know if it believes this is a real DIY project yet. you just made a modern bellows. like, that's so weird. I can't believe what I'm looking at. awesome

    • @Utku Demir yeah I’d say it’s a bit more feasible as It’s far simpler, and keep the CO2 emissions low, but with concrete it makes alot of CO2

    • ​@Sir Santi They've done it with water too. They call it pumped storage hydropower but it's not a compact solution.

  • 4:05 - This is really cool and you almost had it! I think you're basically using quadrature encoded signal to move the coils in which case you should only need 2 coils instead of 3, space the magnets so the spacing is equal to the length of the magnets themselves, and space the coils so they're half the length of the magnets. The smoothness of the motion will depend on the length of the magnets. I'd love to see it work!

    • @Michael Harris Back EMF is the quick and dirty way of driving the linear motor. However, because of the rapid change in direction, a back EMF could cause stuttering as it only approximates the position. Something like a hall effect sensor could perform better, but testing is definitely needed.

    • Ideally you could push it across the rod at constant speed, measure the back EMF and then use it to generate the drive current

    • I think if the magnets in the tube were shorter, he would have had better chances of what he wanted to do

  • I think my favorite part of this is that in the process of trying to reinvent the fan to cool a PC, he builds a high-end custom water-cooling loop 3 different times.....

  • This is a really neat fan, but my favorite part was seeing how happy he got when it finally worked. There's nothing like the joy of solving a problem.

  • If there's ever a slipping issue with the magnet in the center tube, you could try replacing it with a longer magnet for a larger tolerance. Looks solid though so I don't think that'll be an issue, love this, and it's actually really inspiring to see how excited you get :>.

  • OMG~ Thank you for documenting this process to include your failed iterations...the inspiration factor is increased exponentially for me as you are recast in my mind from an impossibly intuitive mechanical/electrical engineering genius to a much more relatable fearless experimenter ;)

  • This was fascinating to watch. Then to see your excitement when it started to work made me just as happy as you were. Phenomenal work buddy. I think you'll be able to upgrade this in time to work even better. I like your "don't give up" attitude. Well done buddy. I would try to sell these, I'd buy one. So very cool, lol get it.

  • 4:05 With 3 coils, you basically have an engine with 3 pistons. Rotary motors benefit from flywheel action to appear smooth, but you're gonna need more 'pistons' for smoother motion while still being able to moderate speed. Flatter coils about 10 degrees out of sync will help with smoothness, but so will adding a load to the movement. You could also trying building the piston in thirds and staggering the permanent magnets, or building the whole thing with multiple rails. Or, you could put the permanent magnets in the load and spin a few layers of coil down the whole length of the rail.

Besides the fan being of no "real world use", the craftmenship and knowledge, that went into this really amaze me. And the final product looks fantastic! Like it got right out of a scifi movie :) Big thumbs up, I can't imagine, how much time went into this!!!

  • The utter excitement on Matt's face when he works out the problem is priceless. Instead of giving him gifts at Christmas, his parents must have just wrapped up broken electronic equipment for him to fix and then filmed his reaction when he'd gotten it to work again.

  • That's awesome man.. would love to see it work as bellows tho... They have a "check valve" so it doesn't pull air.. just pushes it out.

  • James Dyson reportedly furious that someone’s made a more complicated and expensive fan than his.

    • @Zach Crawford It's moving air in a continuous flow like a fan would, so it might be more accurate to refer to it as a single-bladed fan

    • @Bio-error 1d10t: User unable to create name. I would consider his device to be a bellows and not an actual fan. Since it is based on changing the volume in chambers and not hitting the air in a new direction like a typical fan is. It is much more like how our lungs and chest cavity work to move air.

    • @Zach Crawford No, it's got one blade: The panel moving back and forth. Technically, all fans (except ion wind technology) have blades somewhere in their construction.

    • @gameshark528 The first gen of the Dyson hot cold silent bladeless fan was recalled because it catches fire. yes true. It was third generation that Dyson did something about the noise that the silent fan did, and I still find in the 3rd gen its still too loud. Dyson then rebranded as "quieter" instead of silent after advertising complaints to the AVA.

  • About 2 years ago, when I was really hot, I thought to myself “imagine if someone made a fan that had a single blade that went back and forth”. And you actually had the guts to plan all of this out and actually build it.

  • This is my favorite video from you. The ingenuity of this machine are immaculant. Even though it may/may not beat tradtional fans, new inventions and ideas that are outside of the box are the best ideas.

  • Love this project! Really curious how you'll use it for PC-cooling. Especially the graphics card.

    • Because he'll build the PC onto the spot where he had the bag earlier, probably. Cooling, no matter which part, is just air moving through it. Fans don't move that much air with that much power, so they're directly on the heatsinks. However, this will move gigantic pushes of air in one go, meaning; Highly powered, which will push the air through it with quite a bit of force. You can watch his invisible PC video about it. He built a PC into a table and I'm guessing the same principle applies there as does here. So long as you push all the hot air out properly, it'll cool reasonably well. Though it is less direct, which kind of makes it more like passive cooling, which is generally less effective.

  • As a practical solution it's insane. As a piece of art, it's a masterpiece. I love it.

  • That's so cool! I also suggest adding some 1-way valves at each half of each side panels to minimize suction on the exhaust side when the plane goes back and forth.

  • I think you miss iron cores in the electric magnets for the linear motor , they should effect the strength of the magntes. It might help.

  • Interesting idea, I'm glad to see it worked out in the end! I always find it interesting when you do audio tests for these though, as my own PC's fans pretty much mask out any sound from the video.

  • sweet video! You could increase airflow by increasing the area of the inlet/outlet holes and then increasing the water pressure in the valve to achieve an overall higher airflow. You'd just have to keep in mind the possibility of the magnetic lock potentially coming out if there's too high of inertia

  • I love your videos, your ingeniosity and your reactions :D In terms of cost and maintenance I would have gone with the first attempt, but exchanging the moving and static parts: I would have had a moving magnet and a set of non moving solenoids (with iron inside in order to increase and guide the magnetic field), placed orthogonally. In order to obtain a smooth movement, you need to balance the magnetic (current strength), it's evolution speed with the movement of the moving part. Ideally you put into equations the process and solve it to reach the smooth movement; you can simulate everything or just solve the thing from the experimental input (movement) and output (current). All that being said, I love the aesthetic of the final water based version. About the valve, you can imagine a switch such as a rotating cylinder with oriented holes/conducts, inside a Y tube, orienting the water flow in one direction or the other; in that case you need only one water pump and make the switch cylinder rotate. Unlike I believe what you said, the water is very weakly compressible, much less than any gas, but also more than other materials such as solid iron (which crystalizes differently to comply to the higher pressure), or even neutrons (which can merge into a nuclear pasta, see neutron stars for an example). I thought at the end of your video that you are about to reinvent the heart, which is a pump :). Does your pump miss some valves in order to avoid back flowing ? I think it is important in order to continuously renew the air inside the computer. In order to make fully silent your moving pane, maybe you can think of some sort of magnetic levitation (with at least 3 guides) or have just 3 (or more) moving in-water-magnets, or so. Wonderful video ! Keep inventing !

  • Now that I'm watching this again, almost a year later, I'm thinking that the perfect use case for this isn't using it for a computer, but to circulate air in a room or between two rooms. It has a much more pleasing sound to listen 24/7 than a conventional electric fan, and it is far more interesting to look at.

  • "So what cooling do you use for your pc?" "Giant Novelty Bellows." That's to be remembered.

    • If he wanted to use bellows and be quiet, he could copy an accordion bellows. Probably more efficient too, because no leakage. But don't get me wrong, it's a great way to build a very smooth, very quiet, very low friction low pressure hydro-pneumatic cylinder! (Trading high fluid pressure at low flow for low air pressure at high flow)

    • I don't know why he calls it a bellows. It's a pneumatic cylinder.

    • I'm curious if he found a way to mount the hardware to the Bellow it self. How it would work and how it would cool. Maybe design it like a sandwich style. Mobo on one side and gpu on the other. Cool experience to watch him go through though.

I thought two 260 OHM resistors would work as well.. or maby I didn't find the right connection points.. so it didn't work.   • I've seen the completed build and I'm in awe that this actually took you more than a year to complete thanks to the issues you had to face before and after posting this video. While for many, it's considered inefficient use of time and money, it's an innovation of trying things no company is willing to take, and will greatly help people who would want to try the same project in the future.

  • Im not going to be surprised, if one day i found "DIY arc reactor from DIY perks" 😂 this is absolutely amazing! Practically no usage for the real world yet. (correct me if im wrong) But like he said it was to answer his curiosity and with that alone reason, it has made me wonder too! Thank you for an amazing idea and always an amazing video. 💪🏽💪🏽

    • I once read a book of a kid who tried making his own DIY nuclear reactor in his backyard. So i wouldn’t be surprised if someone could make an arc reactor in the future as a DIY project.

  • You're only measuring half of the airflow. Once you install valves, You could also use the airflow from the other end of the box.

  • Could you improve the build by adding copper tube coils on both ends and have water circulate through them for an even cooler breeze

    • @FrozenHaxor even water cooling needs some airflow to get the heat of the radiator And the silence is a plus, if you like total silence like me, and maybe for microphones too
